The hot days of summer are now upon us. As I write this it's 110 degrees outside; its even to hot to try and fry an egg on the street. Don't laugh, my parents saw a couple of young girls trying this the other day. The girls had a piece of tinfoil laid out on the street and the egg was actually frying. They were having a lot of fun with their experiment, plus they were outside and away from the computers and videos games. This put a big smile on my parents face.

Families need to spend more time with each other instead of the kids watching TV, playing video games, messing with social media, texting and/or all of these. Not that I am against this type of entertainment, after all they are a part of our society and have there place. The problem is, most of these are not family events, they are individual activities. That's why I have decided to support rcFlightline.com. It is geared towards families getting involved with each other and learning to work as a team; great teams spend quality time with each other.

I think most people would say, what's radio controlled aircraft have to do with families? Probably the best way to think about it is to use the example of auto racing. In auto racing teams become families because they learn to depend on each other. Each team more than likely has a individual who simply loves working with electronics, another person is the engine lover, then there's the tire specialist who understands which tires are right ones for a particular track, you need a driver who is best suited for a specific race, and there's the event coordinator to make sure they attend the right event best suited for the team. Guess what? The same things are happening in the radio controlled aircraft world. You have a family learning to play together as a team. For example, maybe mom is the event coordinator and designs the team logo and look. Most teams want to stand out as different from the other teams. How about sis as the best helicopter pilot. Maybe dad is the best builder and son is the best 3D pilot. Of course each family is different and better suited for different roles, but I think you get the idea; the family is the team!

My guess would be most people think this hobby is very expensive and really only for adults. Not any more. The cost of getting involved is about the same price as an Xbox, Play Station, Wii, or whatever.  I bet you would be surprised what's involved in this hobby/sport. The first thing that probably stands out the most is the word “sport”. Did you even know there are world class competitions? No it's not the Olympics, but individuals and teams compete against each other from all around the globe. There are actually world champions in various events. Some of the events have to do with flying abilities, building capabilities, design ideas, and much more. In any case, the events are held not only at home, but around the world as well. You can go as far as your heart desires with this as a hobby or a sport. The sky is literally the limit.

It's a place where families can learn about radio controlled aircraft and get involved in events to simply fly their aircraft or attend competitions to show who has the best team. Events are cheap to attend, many are free, and ALL are fun to watch. So it's time to get your family off the couch and get involved in a fun, family friendly, and educational hobby/sport – radio controlled aircraft!
